It’s going to take a radical approach to win
and it MUST be tied to what has happened in the economy within the last few weeks
Please bear with me, as complex issues cannot be explained in 10 second sound bites.
Who am I to make these suggestions about how to win the election? Am I a political strategist? A pundit? A Washington insider?
No! I’m a typical citizen in mainstream America. I’m married with 3 children (two grown) and one in middle school. My husband and I own a small business.
Why should you even care about my ideas?
Because I’m one of the millions of citizens that expressed my outrage about how the government handled the economic crisis which came to a head last week. I wrote my Representative and Senators, more than once. I was one of the millions who were appalled at what we saw going on in the halls of Congress.
What radical approach am I suggesting?
If you have an inkling of a chance to win this election, you are going to have to do most or all of the following:
1. Take the side of those millions who thought the bailout was a dumb idea. Tell them that you were wrong to vote for that rushed, not-well-thought-out plan, and you wish you hadn’t. (I’m assuming you’ve realized, now, what a mistake that was) There’s a novel thought—a politician telling us he made a mistake, was wrong, and that he’s sorry he sided with the majority of lawmakers. Tell us that you voted for this only because you knew that something had to be done, and that you were not in a position to force the Congress to take the time to consider all of the alternative solutions that had been recommended by hundreds of respected economists. But now that you’ve seen what has happened, and learned more, you wish you hadn’t voted that way.
2. Tell Americans that what has been happening in the past week is the nationalization of American businesses, and that’s WRONG! Because that’s a huge step in the direction of SOCIALIZATION! Tell them that if they elect Barack Obama, that together with the majority Democratic Congress, this trend will get even worse, as this is precisely what the liberals want to do with everything in America—have government involved with any and all parts of our lives. Tell them that you DO NOT WANT this, and you have spent your entire life fighting for the freedoms we have in America, including a free market.
3. Tell Americans that you agree with the 80%+ of Americans who do not want the government owning parts of financial institutions and other businesses in this country, and that you will do whatever it takes to get back to a free market with government doing what it was intended to do—provide proper oversight to business practices.
4. Tell the people that if you’re elected President, the following day, on Nov 5th you will begin assembling a group of the brightest minds in our country (because we do have the knowledge to fix this debacle). This will be a group of the top economists in education and top business leaders in industry and non-partisan leaders in government, to put together a plan to fix this mess. Your primary goals to this group will be:
a) Come up with the best and fastest fix, with the least impact on taxpayers;
b) Make sure that government is NOT invested in business, so we can get this economy back to a free-market economy, and
c) Recommend appropriate legislation to get the government back into the role they should have been in all along—responsibly overseeing the economy.
5. Tell the people you’re as mad about this situation as they are—with real passion this time, not watered down, controlled and what appears to be staged emotion.
6. Show the people with simple, but legitimate citations from the Congressional records, articles, etc, (complete with dates, places, etc.) that the Republicans saw this coming and tried to do the responsible thing and enact legislation that would have provided more regulation and oversight, but the Democrats (who had control of Congress) wouldn’t allow the vote, or voted it down, or whatever the facts are that support the claims of WHY the responsible action wasn’t taken by the lawmakers.
7. Tell the voters that while you ended up receiving $21,000+ from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, it was the wrong thing to do, you have given it to charity and you don’t support this activity now or ever in the future. Also, give SPECIFIC details about which Democrats in what positions received how much money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and how those with oversight responsibility turned their heads and let this happen.
8. Tell the voters that when you are President you will refuse to even look at ANY bill that Congress sends you whose contents are not 100% in line with the “topic” of the bill. In other words, no pet projects appended to any bill, just to buy votes from legislators. This cronyism has GOT to stop. The voters have had it with this practice. They are looking for someone who will stand up and say, “It’s over!” We won’t do this to the American people any more.
9. Tell the people that you may be committing political suicide to even suggest that you will do these things, but you believe in shaking up Washington so deeply that you are willing to take the gamble.
10.Expose, with facts to back you up, not just words, everything that the Democrats have done to block efforts to eliminate government waste, make government more efficient, etc. Simple lists or charts with facts and citations (bring in someone to do this in politico-mercials, if you have to). The public doesn’t have the time or inclination to research all the claims that politicians make these days. If they are convincing enough, they can say anything and make it sound like fact. Do this through feature TV presentations; stump speeches are not the right venue. And you need someone else do it, so you can continue your normal appearances.
11.Tell the voters you will submit as many bills to Congress as you can to balance the budget. And when anyone gets in the way of bringing the bill to the floor for appropriate discussion and a vote, you’ll be on TV that very day, exposing the reason why it was blocked.
12.Vow to communicate, communicate, communicate with the American public. While the economy is in such bad shape, tell them you will do it on National TV weekly, to let them know precisely what you are doing to try to repair the economy, as well as what Congress is doing well and what they’re screwing up. This should NOT be done on the Saturday radio program. It should be done on the medium that the majority of American’s are tuned into. When the economy has improved, this communication should be done at LEAST monthly.
Do all these things at every campaign event you have planned between now and the election. Do this at the remaining debate. Spend every $ you have in your campaign budget to get this information out to as many people as possible.
What have you got to lose? You are going down in the polls every day anyway. If you take immediate advantage of appealing HONESTLY to the people who are very angry and have lost nearly all faith in their government, you just might have a CHANCE to win!
As a Navy fighter pilot you need to realize that you are in the midst of battle, and that you’ve got to take chances you wouldn’t otherwise take. You have to make the decision that if you are going down, you are going down with guns blazing! But we believe you can prevail!
